Can 2-1/4 inch Wide Trailer Brake Assemblies Replace 2 inch Assemblies from 1988 Dexter Axle

Question:

My 1988 Dexter 3500lbs axels have 2inch wide brake shoes. All the replacements show 2 1/4inch Will I need to upgrade drums also or do the 2 1/4inch drums actually use 2inch shoes? Thanks

Expert Reply:

If your drums only have an internal width of 2 inches then yes the current brake assemblies part # AKEBRK-35 for 3,500 lb axles would be too wide and you'd need new hubs too which we offer them as part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K but I would recommend confirming your spindle diameter since your trailer is pretty old. Make sure the bearing surfaces are 1.378 inch and 1.063 inch and also make sure the diameter of the spindle where the seal rides is 1.719 inch.
