Is There a Way to Determine How Much Tongue Weight a WD System Removes

Question:

My 2012 Highlander is rated for about 500 lbs hitch weight. I bought a Sherline tongue weight scale and my tongue weight measures 650 pounds on my 19foot Geo Pro 19FBS. Does a weight distribution hitch lower the tongue weight? I think I have the Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control - Round Bar - 14K GTW, 1.4K TW. Item # C17063nk Is this an appropriate use of this hitch? Is there a way to measure tongue weight when wverything is hooked up?

Expert Reply:

A weight distribution system does distribute some of the trailer's tongue weight to the vehicle's front axle but determining how much it actually moves up there is a little involved since there isn't a way to show this on a tongue weight scale. To determine the amount you'd have to find a weigh station that can determine how much weight is on the front and rear axle of a vehicle. You'd need to put your vehicle on the scale and get a figure for the front axle with the spring bars attached on the WD system and without to get a figure on how much tongue weight is getting moved.

Normally this isn't useful info so it's not something we recommend people do to improve anything but if you are just curious this is how you'd do it.
