How To Carry 4 Various Bikes On A 2019 Subaru Ascent And Have Access To The Trunk

Question:

I have a 2019 Subaru Ascent, interested in carrying 4-5 bikes but likely just 4 bikes from road, kids, hybrid bikes some with carbon fiber frames, would this rack be appropriate, does it swing out wide enough for the ascent? Or are there other racks you would recommend. I really like the swing out feature so you can access back without moving bikes

The SportRack Ridge Swing 4 Bike Rack - 2" Hitches - Swinging # SR2415 will certainly be able to swing out far enough to gain access to the trunk of your 2019 Subaru Ascent. I attached a demonstration video which shows this being accomplished on a similar vehicle, the Subaru Outback. For any oddly-shaped bikes such as kid's, step-thru, women's, or full-suspension bikes, you will want to add an adapter bar such as # SR0500. One thing to note is that any hanging bike rack could potentially damage a bike that has a carbon fiber frame.

For a bike rack that won't damage a carbon fiber frame, you will need to go with a wheel mount carrier such as Inno Tire Hold 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches # INH142. Keep in mind, this does not swing out but it does fold down to allow access to the trunk only when bikes are not loaded on the carrier. To allow this bike rack to swing away you can add a swing away adapter such as # Y02483; but keep in mind this will reduce your hitch capacity by 50%. For example, if your trailer hitch receiver has a max tongue weight of 750lbs, your max weight limit will now be 375lbs.

I attached several demonstration videos for you to check out. I also attached a link to the few 5-bike carriers that are available just in case you decided to go that route instead.
