Lug Nut Torque Spec for 4.80 x 8 Trailer Wheel/Tire

Question:

Hi i wanted to know the correct torque spec for my new trailer tires. I used a 3/4 socket to tighten the bolts to 60ft lbs. Is that enough

Expert Reply:

The correct torque value would depend on the diameter of the wheel stud (not the wrench size needed to remove the lug nut or bolt).

• 7/16 inch stud- 55-65 ft-lbs
• 1/2 inch stud 75-78 ft-lbs
• 9/16 inch stud 95-115 ft-lbs

These torque values hold true for steel wheels that are between 8-14 inches in diameter.

A wheel meant for the 4.80 x 8 tire would use a 1/2 inch wheel stud, so you'd want to go up to at least another 15 ft-lbs.

I've linked to a series of articles with tons of information about trailer wheels and tires.
