My New Grease Seal Depth Is Different From The Depth Of The Original Grease Seal, Is This Okay?

Question:

I am repacking my trailer bearings and noticed the new SKR 17144 grease seal depth is about 3mm shorter than original 010-019-00 seal which when installed flush in the hub leaves a little movement in the inner bearing. Is this acceptable to have this kind of play in the bearing?

It would appear the the new seal SKR 17144 is a single lip seal and the Grease Seal # RG06-050 that you originally had is a double lip seal. That is the only difference that I can find on the seals. The double lip is better at keeping dirt and water out and the clean grease in.

You will have a little play between the grease seal and the inner bearing on the hub, without it the bearings could cause damage to the grease seal. Once you slide the hub onto the spindle the grease seal will fit on the spindle where it needs to, and the bearing will catch on the wall of the spindle. Be sure the Grease Seal sits flush on the inner hub when you install it into the hub.
