Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a 2013 Ford Explorer

Question:

Im looking to use a hitch-mounted cargo carrier on the back of my 2013 Ford Explorer, and Im trying to find a good balance between cargo load and size. Ill be driving on pretty busy highways, and want to avoid having something that sticks very far out behind the bumper. Im interested in the folding carriers, but it seems like they add a lot of length to the overall installation. Basically, Im trying to decide between a 60x20 and a 60x24 inch carrier, and also trying to decide between folding and fixed. Thanks!

There are several cargo carriers that Ford Explorer owners prefer over others. I have included a helpful link to the right that has the popular cargo carriers that 2013 Ford Explorer owners are purchasing. Some of them are roof mounts and would not apply.

The Pro Series carrier # 63153 is a popular option. It fits a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver and has a 500 pound capacity. I have included a link to a video review showing the carrier on a 2012 Explorer. You can see how far that it will stick out. This is a fixed carrier.

For a smaller carrier that will be closer to the vehicle we have # PS1040300. If used in a 2 inch hitch the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier is 6 inches.

If you are looking at enclosed carriers than the Yakima EXO Swing Away Enclosed Cargo Carrier - 2" Hitches - 10 cu ft - 100 lbs # Y62VR is a popular choice. The benefits of this carrier including being to safely lock contents inside, the swinging feature that allows greater access to the rear of the vehicle. I have linked a video on this carrier as well.
