Should I Use a Hitch Adapter or Match the Bike Rack to my 1-1/4 Trailer Hitch

Question:

i have a 1 1/4inch hitch and need to use an adapter to make it 2inch for a hitch rack that is 2. If the rack is 50lbs and two bikes weigh 50lbs and by using the 2inch adapter which extends it out a few more inches, what becomes the maximum tongue weight? Im trying to decide if i need to buy a hitch rack that will fit into the 1 1/4 hitch so that i wouldnt need an adapter.

It would be much better to get a bike rack that matches the hitch opening size. Any time you use an adapter, you cut the hitch capacity in half. If your tow vehicle is a 2007 Volkswagen Passat, this means you have a Class I hitch trailer hitch, rated at 200lbs for tongue weight. Once you add the adapter, you would instantly be dropping your hitch tongue weight capacity to 100lbs. Your bike rack and bikes would weigh too much to carry on your hitch using an adapter.

The Kuat Beta 2-bike rack, part # B202-114, is a good choice for Class I hitches because it's made of lightweight aluminum, so it is easy to maneuver and will be a bit less strain on your trailer hitch. I am also including a link to all the Class I compatible bike racks we offer so you can see what else is available.

If you get a hanging style rack like the Kuat Beta, you may also need an adapter bar like part # HE6009 if you will be carrying a womens bike or one with an alternative frame style.

I am including links to demonstration videos for both the bike rack and adapter bar I mentioned.
