Determining The Correct Weight Distribution Hitch For Towing 2016 Gulf Stream Wide Open 310KBS

Question:

Looking at the Blue Ox WD sway control hitch, but need a 2.5inch shank. The trailer TW is about 1200lbs, so that would mean the BXW1503. Reading another persons question, it looks like I can bump up to the BXW2003. How would this work in my situation? Would tow experience be hampered with moving up to the BXW2003? Tow Vehicle is: 2016 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Camper is: 2016 gulf stream wide open 310KBS Thank you

I would be happy to go over finding the correct weight distribution hitch for towing your 2016 Gulf Stream Wide Open 310KBS with your 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD, but you will want to confirm the total tongue weight of your setup.

Total tongue weight is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to tow trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your truck. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight measurement is with a tongue weight scale like the # e99044 but there are other methods which are outlined in the included help article.

Now assuming that your total tongue weight is the 1200lbs you mentioned then the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - Underslung - 15K GTW, 1.5K TW # BXW1503 would be correct if your trailer has an underslung coupler which is pretty uncommon so you would likely need the # BXW1500 which is the same system but designed for a standard coupler.

These systems are rated for total tongue weights ranging from 1000-1500lbs which is likely where you total tongue weight will fall, but you will need 2" hitch ball # A-90 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # 19286 to match the coupler on your trailer.

Since your Sierra has a 2-1/2" receiver you would also need Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Shank for 2-1/2" Hitches - 9" Long - 9 Hole Adjustment # BXW4028.

The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - Underslung - 20K GTW, 2K TW # BXW2003 you were looking at is compatible with 1500-2000lbs of total tongue weight, but would require your trailer to have an underslung coupler.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
