Troubleshooting Clanking Noise When Towing Small Trailer With 2020 Ford Expedition

Question:

I have a 2020 expedition and when traveling pull a small cargo trailer. going down the road and up to 70+ miles an hour we constantly hear clanking going on from either the hitch bar or trailer connection to ball. if it was a pickup truck dont think we would notice as much as when pulling with an SUV. Would the convert a ball work for this or the rockerball be best.

There are a few different things that could be going on to cause the noise you are hearing when towing a trailer with your 2020 Ford Expedition.

First I recommend double checking the the hitch ball you are using matches the coupler of your small cargo trailer. If you are not sure which size hitch ball your trailer uses the correct size will be stamped on the coupler. I included a link to all of our hitch balls should you find the one you currently have is incorrect.

The more likely option is you are hearing the ball mount move around in the hitch. Typically when installed a ball mount will have side to side and up and down movement which can be heard as a clunking sound. To fix this you would need to use a stabilizing device like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches # RM-061 which when mounted locks down the ball mount to keep it from rattling.

I included a video of the # RM-061 for you to take a look at.
