Choosing Weight Disribution System for Casita Travel Trailer Towed by 2008 Chevy Colorado

Question:

I tow a Casita Travel Trailer that weighs approximately 3,000 lbs. and has a tongue weight of approximately 400 lbs. My tow vehicle is a Chevrolet Colorado pickup with a tow rating of 5,500 lbs. I normally carry 150-200 lbs. of tools, etc. in the bed of the truck. My question is this: Would you recommend that I include the weight being carried in the truck bed when I calculate my trailer tongue weight i.e., would the tongue weight here be 400 lbs. or 550 lbs.? What would you recommend for my situation?

When you figure your tongue weight, you find the total of the actual tongue weight of the trailer fully loaded (as towed), and any weight carried behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If your tools are stowed in front of the rear axle, their weight would not be considered as tongue weight.

From the excellent information that you provided, I recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System, item # RP66558. This is a great total system for weight distribution and sway control, and will handle any load within the tow rating on your 2008 Chevy Colorado.
