If you are not getting any power on the output side of the brake controller even if the controller itself is getting power there is a test you can do to determine if the controller is bad. You will first need to sever the blue wire a few inches from the back of the controller. Next you will need to use a circuit tester, like # PTW2979 if needed, to test the end coming out of the controller. The wire should only show power when you apply the manual override.
If it does not then the controller is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is hot all the time then it will need to be replaced. If working properly then there is a misconnection somewhere between the controller and trailer connector.
If the brake controller is not getting 12 volt power make sure that the black wire is attached to the positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker. Then make sure the white wire is attached to the negative battery terminal. No other ground location should be used for best results.
If it is the red wire going into the controller that does not have power then you will use a circuit tester and test the brake switch wires. You may not be connected to the correct wire on the brake switch. You need the wire that only shows power when you step on the brake pedal. If the wire shows power with the headlights or turn signals then it is not the correct wire.
If you cannot find a good wire at the brake switch then you may have a blown stop light or CHMSL fuse. Use the owners manual and/or the legend on the power distribution box lid to locate the fuses and replace as needed. There are other places to look if there is a problem at the brake switch. You can locate the CHMSL fuse and use a fuse tap to tap directly into it, route the wire to the brake controller red wire and get the brake signal that way.
