Recommended Equipment for Towing Small Cargo Trailer With 2020 Ford Escape
Question:
Hello, I am trying to inquire about which tow assembly would be best for my 2020 Ford Escape. Im moving cross multiple states, looking to haul the smallest U-Haul. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

To tow a small rental trailer, you'll need a trailer hitch, a ball mount, trailer ball and a trailer wiring harness.
I'd recommend going with a partially concealed hitch like the Draw-Tite Class III, part # C23FR. The hitch
crossbar will be concealed behind the crossbar, with the only visible portion of the hitch being the receiver tube and the safety chain hoops.
For a trailer wiring harness, I'd recommend the # TE54FR from Tekonsha. U-Haul typically puts surge couplers on their cargo trailers, so you won't need a brake controller. The momentum from the vehicle stopping will compress the surge coupler which applies the trailer brakes.
For a ball mount, use # 2753 and # 63845 for a 2 inch trailer ball. U-Haul typically used adjustable couplers that will be compatible with any trailer ball size, but I'd recommend confirming this with them.
I've linked to installation videos for the hitch and the trailer wiring harness.
