What Parts Are Needed To Tow A 2003 Jeep Liberty Behind a Motor Home

Question:

We just bought a 2003 Jeep Liberty and are in need of a base plate and tow bar to pull it behind a motor home. Please advise if you have both of these and if so, what are costs, shipping, etc? Is this something that we can install ourselves? Thanks

To flat tow a vehicle, you need a tow bar, base plates that mount to the vehicle and provide an attachment point for the tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution and a supplemental braking system.

The base plates I recommend for your 2003 Jeep Liberty are the Demco, part # DM9518126. This kit has hidden reinforcements that provide a clean, unobtrusive look when the Jeep is not being towed. This kit will work on Jeeps with or without a brush guard.

The Demco Commander tow bar, part # DM9511012, is the tow bar I recommend. The arms can be moved indpendently and it provides up to a 1-1/2 inch drop or rise without an adapter. The safety cables are included as well.

For lighting, If you do not plan on towing the Jeep often, I recommend the Magnetic Towing Light Kit, part # RM-2120. I am including a link to a FAQ page on choosing the best lighting kit for your application.

Most states now require supplemental braking on vehicles that are being towed. I would recommend the Roadmaster InvisiBrake Braking System, part # RM-8700. This braking system uses real-time braking action, ensuring that your towed car brakes at the same time and for the same duration as the brakes in your RV. In addition, there will be no false braking when you hit bumps or potholes. I am including a link to a video of the InvisiBrake system being installed on a Jeep Liberty.

These items can be installed by yourself if you have some basic mechanical knowledge and access to a good set of tools.

You should contact your Jeep dealer or consult your owners manual for additional steps needed to take when flat-towing. Some vehicles may require additional equipment before being flat-towed.
