Can Wheels With Load Range C Tires Handle The Increased Air Pressure Of Load Range D Tires

Question:

Have a tandem axle toy hauler. Alloy wheels stamped max 1820 lbs. ST205/75R15 load range C tires at 50 psi max. Can I go to a load range D 65 psi tire or do I have to stay with 50 psi tire because of rim?

Helpful Expert Reply:

The wheels found on your tandem axle toy hauler are not the limiting factor of the max PSI, instead it is the valve stem used.

For example if you want to change your tires from the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM10244 to a tire rated for Load Range D like the Provider ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # TR20515D you would want to use a valve stem like the Americana High Pressure Rubber Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20904 which is rated to 80 PSI.

Keep in mind that even though the Load Range D tire has a higher load capacity, you will still be limited to the weight capacity of the wheel, which it your case is 1820lbs.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
