Electric Trailer Brakes for Trailer With 8,000 lb Axles

Question:

I have a 2020 Grand Design 390RK. Need to upgrade axles from 7K to 8K and tires from G to H load bearing. Prefer to stay with electric brakes. Is it possible to perform work on site or will a shop need to do it

We can accommodate the electric trailer brakes for an 8,000 lb axle with the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-8, which mount with the Mounting Bolts and Hardware for 12-1/4" Brake Assemblies - 8,000 lbs to 9,000 lbs # BRKH122508.

That said, the largest axles we offer are 7,000 lb axles, and the largest load capacity we have for what should be 235/80-16 tires on your trailer are load range G. A new axle will likely have to be sourced by via fabricator or local installer or RV dealer. That said, to answer your last question, generally work is done at a shop by professional installers.

In regards to the brakes, they will fit 12-1/4" diameter x 3-3/8" wide hub and drums, which are the typical size for drums on an 8,000 lb axle, which are larger than drums on a 7,000 lb axle. They also require you to have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange so be sure you have that as well when you source your axle.

I have added links below to video reviews for you to take a look at of the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-8.
