Bike Rack for Spare Tire Clearance on 2005 Honda CR-V
Question:
Id like to ask if the Thule 9031XT is discontinued? Ive found a 9027XT but I dont think it will fit with the spare on my 05 CR-V. Ive found a 9027 locally, but not sure if the hitch mounting part can be replaced for the longer one on the 9031?

Yes you are correct the Thule Vertex Swing is an older model and it has been replaced with the Thule Apex Swing XT # TH9027XT. It might a tight fit depending on which trailer hitch you have installed. Different brands have better clearance.
Thule states that the clearance needed from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch to the outside edge of your spare tire should be less than 8.8". Most trailer hitches for your CR-V are around 8-1/2" to 8-3/4" which would be enough room for the Thule Apex Swing to work with your CR-V.
If your hitch sits too far under your bumper and the bike rack won't clear your spare tire I would consider using the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483. This allows most Thule bike racks to swing away from your vehicle to gain full access to your hatch. Using the non-swinging Thule Apex XT 4 # TH9025XT would give you enough clearance to use with your CR-V.
