Best Ski Cargo Box to Clear Rear Hatchback Door
Question:
Hello, Can you recommend a few rooftop cargo boxes that are: 1 compatible with a 2014 Honda CRV with factory crossbars that will not interfere with the hatchback I measured 49 from middle of front crossbar to hatchback door, but when the door is opened it is more like 46 2 sits no more than 16 above the crossbars for garage door clearance 3 long enough to carry at least 180cm length skis Thank you so much for your help!

I have the perfect cargo box in mind for your 2014 Honda CR-V, and here's why its dimensions are so important:
You only have 46" from your front crossbar to your hatchback door, but your skis are 71" long and your bars are 24" apart. For weight distribution purposes here where you need to center the box on your bars, you need a box that's as close to 71" as possible and even then you have a 2-foot overhang past your front bars. Too much longer and you risk balance issues.
My best recommendation for you is the SportRack Horizon Rooftop Cargo Box # SR7016. Its external dimensions are 76" long x 32-3/4" wide x 14-11/16" tall. You'll have to position it a little bit towards the front, but it's shorter than other similar cargo boxes and won't have as much front overhang. It is also short enough at almost 15" to clear your garage door.
I did a video review of this cargo box which I attached below if you want to see it in action. Please note that the mounting clamps can be a bit tedious at first and I recommend asking someone to help hold the hardware in place. I used the Rightline Gear Moki Door Step # RL100660 for the needed height and stability to install and load this cargo box. I highly recommend picking up one too, it's very helpful!
