I spoke with my contact at Pop and Lock and he told me that the Custom Locking Tailgate Handle, # PAL5500, can be painted, however, since this item will be exposed to the elements, cracking and chipping may be common.
He recommended prepping the handle properly so paint stays on the handle longer and he also recommended using an automotive paint that will be more durable and last longer. You should also not paint the lock core or any mechanical or metal parts.
For an OEM appearance, it may be best to take the item to a professional automotive painter.
