What’s the width of the base? I have a 53” bar and am not sure if I can put one on each side and still have room for 4x8 sheets.

There are end caps on the Rhino-Rack Roof Rack for Thule and Yakima Tracks - 2 Heavy-Duty Crossbars #Y01-140B-NT that are tapered but the actual bar itself is not tapered so if you really wanted to cut them shorter you certainly could.
