Troubleshooting Right Brake Light Coming On when Left Blinker Activated on Flat Towed Vehicle

Question:

On the 2020 Buick Envision we used the wiring kit per your recommendations. We hooked up the diodes and when testing everything we found when left turn signal is lite the right brake light comes on also. We also notice that the license plate lights won’t burn with the hookup on the RV. The parking lights work ok and also the right turn signal works correctly. For brakes we are using the air force 1 system from you also. What to try to correct this issue with the left turn and right brake light? We swapped diodes and it didn’t change anything.

I would start by checking your ground wire on the motorhome and on the vehicle side of the Roadmaster # RM-15267, since that's the root of a lot of issues we see and should at least resolve the issue with the license plate light, but there's a lot going on here. I will also say that the diodes are not wire specific, meaning they can be used on any wire.

To have the right brake light come on when the left blinker comes on is rather odd, since they should be on completely different circuits. I would start by testing the motorhome's 7 way plug to make sure that when you activate the turn signals that there isn't any power bleeding over on to other circuits that might be causing other lights to activate. You'll need to use a circuit tester like the # PTW2993, and you'll want to check for power when running through these functions. If you're finding that power comes through on a circuit other than the one you've activated, there might be a short on the motorhome's system. You'll want to check for damaged wires running from the 7 way to their connections and replace as needed.

If you can check those and let me know what you find, that would be where to start. I've also linked the instructions for the installation of the Roadmaster 7 wire to 6 wire kit that you may want to refer back to as well.
