Single axle double I shackle installation
Question:
Im having a difficult time pressing the 9/16-in bolt completely through the shackle. it leaves like a 1/32nd inch gap that Im concerned wit. I put a lot of torque on it although Im not using a gauge. I started wondering, because the shackles are stamped on one side, if theyre not tapered in some way but I dont see that. Im also thinking an impact gun might be good for this?

The shackle straps do not have a taper and should not be over tightened to the spring or hanger because they are designed to move and pivot. Some bolts like # 166081 will have a spline near the head to hold that shackle tightly on one end and you can use a hammer with a block or a rubber mallet to make sure that is seated correctly without damaging the head of the bolt. The bolt does have a slight taper at that spline for that reason and the shackle strap will allow you to drive that spline in for a tight fit then will still allow pivoting and movement on the opposite side. Splines need to be driven in instead of turned.
