Brake Controller for 2018 Ram 3500 That Does Not Require Computer to be Flashed

Question:

I have a 2018 RAM 3500 with a Integrated Factory Controller. I bought a new 2020 Van Leigh Fifth Wheel about 4 months after I bought the truck. The truck was purchased new just for a FifthWheel. I have had my trailer for 1 year. The day I brought it home after driving an hour I got a trailer disconnect and the brakes were gone. This has been an intermittent problem for a year. I have been to 3 Ram dealers and they blame the trailer. I have paid a RV tech 500 dollars for a full day of diagnostic a month after owning the trailer and he thinks it’s the truck. He ran a new temporary power cable directly from the pin box to the brake bi-passing internal trailer wiring to remove that possibility of bad wiring and we still got a intermittent disconnect so that makes me feel that it may be the truck controller. I am more than frustrated and have read many things on the internet about trucks having this issue. I even see in your P3 install video it’s on a RAM 3500 with a Factory controller that evidentially didn’t work either. I find that very interesting. So my question is do you think the P3 will solve my problem. Can I install the P3 with the required wiring harness and try it without getting my truck flashed to remove the factory controller to see if the brakes work first before flashing the truck to remove the factory unit. I don’t want to go to the cost of flashing the truck only to find out the P3 Has the same disconnect issue and then paying twice to flash the truck. Once to remove the original and then to reinstall the original if the P3 doesn’t fix the problem. In addition all of this was virtually new. New truck new trailer and I was asked to check connections at the 7 pin to make sure they were clean and in good contact. I have done this multiple times. I even tried a little dielectric grease with no help. Also this intermittent disconnect occurs at either the in bed 7 pin or the bumper 7 pin. They both behave the same way. Thank you for any info and wisdom you can pass on. I have never had a issue like this from RVs or boats in the last 30 years. It shouldn’t be this hard to activate electric brakes.

While we do have a solution for you, and I can certainly understand your frustration, but brake controllers that wire in such as the Prodigy P3 # 90195 will require you take your 2018 Ram 3500 to the dealer to get it flashed or you'll get an error code.

Since this understandably seems like something you want to avoid, you do not have to get your truck flashed if you use the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180.

The Echo will just plug into the back of your Ram's 7-way and completely bypass the factory controller. It won't take up any space in your Ram's cab and you just need the app on your smartphone to set it up and you're done. This is definitely the route I recommend going.

I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well of the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180.
