Sometimes a typical, flat awning isn't a great fit for your vehicle, especially if you have a compact crossover or a smaller vehicle. The Rhino Rack Dome Awning has an arched ceiling that provides extra overhead clearance so you can stand under the awning, even if your vehicle has a low roof.
The awning unrolls from your vehicle's roof to provide 64 sq ft of shade. Unzip the storage bag, remove the vertical support poles and dome support arms from inside, and set them on the ground. Then, roll out the canvas. Once the frame edge has been exposed, you can flip out the horizontal arms from the inside of the frame. Lastly, grab the vertical support poles and connect them to the slots at the end of the horizontal arms.
To create the dome structure, assemble the dome support arms like you would tent poles and feed them into the sleeves on the top of the awning. After that, secure the outer flaps of the awning to the vertical support poles and tighten the poles to the necessary height. You can also adjust the poles to different heights to suit any type of terrain.
Once the poles are set, find suitable locations to drive the included metal pegs into the ground. Then, to fully secure the awning, attach the hooked guy ropes to the frame and secure them to the ground with the pegs.
Strong and lightweight, the awning's ripstop, polycotton canvas is UV protected and water and mold resistant. The telescoping poles and frame are constructed of black anodized aluminum, so they won't rust or fade when exposed to the weather. When not in use, all the parts are stored inside the heavy-duty PVC storage cover.
The included mounting brackets attach to the channels on the awning's frame and mount to your Pioneer platform or crossbars with top channels. Simply slide the nuts into the channels and tighten them down.
You can add a sidewall extension (sold separately) to the dome awning to provide a windbreak and improve your outdoor experience. Simply snap the studs on the extension into the holes on either side of the awning and secure the Velcro strip along the edge. Then, attach the Velcro tabs around the vertical support pole of the awning. Finally, use guy ropes and pegs to secure it to the ground. The sidewall is made of the same polycotton canvas as the awning.

I chose this one for the dome shape so the rear door of the cap could be opened under the awning with little interference. Feels well made. And the awning easily mounted to a Rhino Rack roof track to make it look stealthy and snug to the roof. Only negative, is the dome tent poles are difficult to install in the pockets, but I assume this will get easier with use and as the temperature outside increases. I should have bought some sand screws for the beach.
The Rhino-Rack Dome 1300 is a great addition to my Toyota Tacoma. I use my Tacoma for transporting SCUBA gear and the Awning is great for having shade at a dive site. Easy to setup and take down.
I give this product five stars for the concept, and one star for the execution. The domed design is brilliant for the back of an SUV or CUV, because it allows the rear hatch to be open while the awning is up. I camp out of the back of my CUV, so having a large, dry, covered area is great for when it turns rainy (or if the sun is really hot). The problem is the tension rods that form the structure of the dome. They are at least an inch too long, and I found it literally impossible to bend them enough to tuck their ends into the pockets that are supposed to hold them (I spent many hours trying before I gave up from exhaustion). If you possess exceptional upper body strength this might not be a problem for you. If you're just an average guy, forget about it. Also, the elastic that holds together the individual tubes that make up the tension rods is too weak. When you go to take the awning down and need to pull the rods out of the channels in the fabric that they run through, they fall apart and get stuck. This makes removing them a difficult and frustrating task. Both these problems can be remedied, but the review rules prevent me from describing how.
This is a good awning. Bought mine for a larger teardrop camper and used the Seasucker vacuum mounts to secure it. So far so good.
Great service. Good quality awning, I will be mounting on Bajarack roof rack for Tacoma. Have a RTT mounted on Yakima Outpost bed rack.
I LOVE my dome! Not only has it saved me during rainstorms in the mountains, but it is absolutely perfect for my booth at art shows! I built out my truck bed with drawers for camping gear, which double for display trays for my artwork at shows. Check out the photos! I would like some side tarps to attach during those really nasty rain storms - but other than that, it's easy to put together, compact, doesn't reduce our fuel economy and was worth every penny. I'd buy another one, without a doubt.
Fits perfect on our 2015 Honda Fit. Helps if you're good with following directions and take accurate measurements.
Easy to install and deploy. Great coverage area for such a small form factor awning. Can't beat it for the price.

I looked into some information about the difficulties that you are experiencing and have a few suggestions for you. The tension rods are meant to be tight in order to hold up the awning through rainstorms and windy days. Over time the material should become easier to work with same as with warmer weather. I suggest that before using the tension rods try to set the material in the sun for a while to have the material warm up, this should help with the material flexing and allowing it to become easier to work with as well. As far as the elastic between the connections of the tension rods, I would suggest that when attaching the rods, you slightly twist the rods to hold the connection a bit tighter, so the rods do not come apart when taking down the awning. I have the link to our installation video below. I suggest to start watching at the 7:46 time stamp to watch the installation for the awning portion.
