Do I need a hitch and what kind for a 2012 Ford Focus sedan?

To carry a hitch mounted bike rack on your 2012 Ford Focus sedan, you will need to install a trailer hitch. I recommend installing the Curt Trailer Hitch, # C11158. This is a Class I trailer hitch with a 200 lb tongue weight capacity.
There are two different styles of hitch mounted bike racks. One of our most popular bike racks is the Swagman XTC-2, # S64670. This is a platform-style bike rack that makes loading and unloading easy. I have attached installation instructions and a video for you to check out.
If the platform-style bike racks does not appeal to you, then you may want to look at a hanging-style bike rack like the Thule Camber 2 Bike Rack, # TH9058. This bike rack will support your bikes by the top frame tube and includes anti-sway cradles to reduce movement of the bikes while driving. This bike rack also includes a tilting feature that give you access to your trunk. I have attached the installation instructions and a video of this bike rack as well.
Keep in mind that with a class I trailer hitch, you will be limited to carrying only two bikes.
If you wanted to carry 3 bikes, then you could look into using a trunk mounted bike rack like the Yakima HangOut 3 Bike Rack, # Y02638. This would not require you to purchase a trailer hitch because the bike rack will mount directly to the truck and bumper of your vehicle. This bike rack uses straps that attach to the top, side and bottom edges of your trunk and the support arms of the rack will rest on the top of your truck and bumper.
I have attached a photo of what this bike rack will look like when mounted on your vehicle.
