Recommended Lightweight 4-Bike Rack for 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL

Question:

Hello, I’m looking at the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Bike Platform Rack Item # HR1400Z or a swing-away hitch 4 bike rack Thule or SportRack for a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL. In addition, to general recreational biking, it’ll also be used for camping which is why I’m thinking of a swing away. However, the most important feature that I’m looking for is a rack that does not need adaptors which is why I’m looking at the platform for a women’s and kids’ bike 16”. The rack should ideally be able to easily accommodate a women’s mountain bike and two kids’s bikes and only occasionally a men’s bike. As I will be generally mounting and unmounting the rack myself and live in a densely populated urban area, it would also be great for it be a lighter more compact model. Thank you and I look forward to hearing your recommendations. Regards,

Thank you for all of the great info!

The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HR1400Z is a great bike rack itself, but from all of the info you gave me I don't think it's the best option for you as it weighs in at 81 lbs in the 4-bike configuration; definitely not a very light model.

Instead I recommend checking out the Hollywood Racks Destination # HR4000 which weighs in at 42 lbs which is very light for a 4-bike platform rack. This is perfect for standard bikes as it has a weight capacity of 35 lbs per bike and it has various adjustment points to fit different-sized bikes. If you check out the attached photo you can see that we were able to get a kids bike on there no problem.

For the swing-away feature I recommend picking up the Kuat Pivot 2 # PVP20B. This is extremely easy to use and it means you'll be able to have unrestricted access to the cargo area of your 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL without taking off any bikes or the bike rack.

For an all-in-one option I highly recommend the Thule Apex Swing XT # TH9027XT over the SportRack Ridge Swing # SR2415. Thule is a premium option while SportRack is on the lower end of the spectrum. The Apex Swing XT has features that are easier to use plus the cradles are spaced 7" apart which makes loading/unloading bikes a LOT easier.

Going with the Apex Swing XT will give you a 42 lb bike rack and you don't have to mess with the swing-away adapter (installing it and then your bike rack), however you likely will need to use adapter bars for your kid's bikes and possibly your personal bike as well so there is that trade-off. For an adapter bar I recommend the Thule # TH982XT because it has the best range of 16" - 31-1/2" which will fit with basically any bike out there.

If you don't already have a trailer hitch I recommend going with the Curt # C13153 because we have found that the Curt hitches tend to have the best welds and a thicker powder coat, both of which contribute to a hitch that will last longer.
