Using a Boat Winch On Roof Rack Of 2013 Nissan Frontier to Winch 70 Lb Boat Onto Truck Bed Cover

Question:

I own a 2013 Nissan Frontier truck that has a box lid cover which I transport a 70 lb aluminum boat on top of. The truck has one of the Nissan built in roof racks that looks very solid. My question is: can i install a small 2000 lb winch to the roof rack to use to pull the boat up onto the box lid? Thanks Tony

I cannot say without a doubt that your roof rack could not be damaged by attaching a winch to it to pull the boat. It also may void any warranties that may be on the rack itself or vehicle since it is not designed for that use. However, most of the weight will be on the winch itself so it is ultimately up to you if you want to take that chance.

I recommend to use the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL16003 which has plenty enough capacity for the 70 lb boat. This has a ratcheting handle that allows for clearance of the roof rack cross bar to use it. I have attached the mounting hole dimensions but you may consider using U-bolts to install around the cross bar instead of drilling into it. The base measures 3 and a 1/2 inches long by 3 and 1/4 inches wide. You should be able to get a good idea of where you can mount it on the rack with that measurement.
