A brake controller is not a vehicle specific item, so one way or the other, it can be installed in just about any vehicle.
If your new Tacoma has the factory installed 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper, you can re-use the # 3040-P Brake Control Wiring Adapter from your Tundra (if you used one). If not, you would need to purchase one. One end of the # 3040-P would plug into the rear of your Tekonsha Primus, the other end plugs into the factory connection port located between the kick panel and the emergency brake pedal (see photo).
If your Tacoma does NOT have the factory 7-way, the controller would need to be hardwired into place using our # ETBC7 brake control install kit. You would also need to install a 4-pole trailer connector # 118496 for the 7-way adapter included in the kit to plug into. The install kit contains everything else needed to install a brake controller.
I have linked you to the instructions for the install kit and the # 3040-P harness. I have also linked to an install video showing the install kit being used to install a controller on a 2008 Tacoma. The procedure for your 2012 would be identical.
