How To Choose the Correct Amp Rating for a Progressive Dynamics Lithium Converter/Battery Charger

Question:

Hello, I currently have a 2012 Winnebago ERA motorhome which has a stock Schumaker 13 vdc-55 amp charger. The stock battery was replaced by the original owner. The replacement is an Optimum AGM I dont know the battery capacity. Im considering converting to a LiFePO4 battery. I realize that Ill need to convert the charger to one which has the lithium charging profile such has a PD91xxALV. I havent decided on the total battery capacity as yet. It could be 100 amp-hr, 170amp-hr or 200 amp-hr. My question is what amperage charger should I use depending on the chosen battery capacity? Thank you. Jeff

In order to choose the correct Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Battery Charger like part # PD9145ALV you will indeed need to know the total amp hour battery capacity. That said, there is not an exact formula to determine the correct amperage output of a charge converter based on the total amp hour battery capacity but a good rule of thumb is around 50% give or take. For example, if your battery bank has a 100 amp hour capacity a 45 amp converter would be fine. Please note, the bigger the amp capacity is not always better in regards to charge converters.

I have attached a list of all our options below based on amp capacity.
