Differences Between Class IV and V Trailer Hitches
Question:
What is the difference between a class IV weight carrying hitch and a class V weight carrying hitch? What are their typical ratings without the use of weight distribution equipment?

Expert Reply:
Most class V hitches will use a 2-1/2 inch receiver opening (although there are a few exceptions that use a 2 inch receiver) and will have towing capacities up near or to 20,000 lbs towing/2000 lbs tongue weight capacity. A Class IV will have a 2 inch receiver with a capacity up to 12000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity up to 1200 lbs.
The weight distributing capacity of the hitch can vary by vehicle, so if you'd care to reply with the year, make and model of the vehicle in question I'd be happy to make a specific recommendation for you. I've linked you to some helpful articles that will go into a bit more detail regarding the differences.
