Recommended Adapter For Volkswagen With 7-Way Plug and Trailer With 4-Pole Flat
Question:
which connector do I need for my pre wired 2009 VW Tiguan? The adapter is already installed under the bumper next to the hitch by VW. I need to be able to plug into 5 outer pins and 1 center pin. I have a 3 pin plus ground flat connector on my trailer.

It sounds like you have a 7-Way round plug on your 2009 VW Tiguan and you need to plug into the 4-flat on your trailer. I recommend use the Hopkins 7-Way RV to 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter, # HM47365. The adapter plugs into your 7-way on the VW and the other end plugs into the 4-flat on your trailer to power the trailer lights. I have attached a video for your reference.

It actually depends on the option code. They can be prewired for 4 or 7 way, or actually already have the socket there. Most are only prewired, and have a plate where the normal 7 way rv style socket would be. You have to buy the socket from VW, which would mount in the hole and the prewired harness has a connector (already behind the plate mentioned earlier) that plugs into it. Then you would use a normal American style 7 way to 4 way adapter.
