Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2012 Toyota RAV4 to Clear Spare Tire
Question:
Two questions. Will the yakima Ridgeback clear the 2012 RAV4 rear tire? Also, will I be able to open the rear door with the rack on?

You will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your 2012 Toyota RAV4 back to the distance required to clear the spare tire to determine if a bike rack will fit. On other model years we have installed hitches on, the measurement was as much as 7 inches or so, depending on the specific year and hitch. Measuring will be important.
If you find that the measurement on your vehicle is less than 11-1/2 inches, the Yakima RidgeBack, # Y02458, will fit. You will most likely not be able to open the rear door with the rack on, even if tilted.
Another option is to use a swinging bike rack like the Yakima FullSwing, # Y02465. You would need to have a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver for this rack to work. To determine if it will fit, the measurement from pin hole to clear the spare must be less than 9-1/2 inches. This rack will swing off to the side of the vehicle, even with bikes attached, to allow access to the rear of the vehicle. I have included a link to a video of this rack as well.
For any rack, if you will be carrying womens, childrens, or alternative frame bikes, I recommend using the Tube Top adapter bar, # Y02531, for greater ground clearance and to carry the bikes more level. I have included a link to a video that will show you how the adapter works.
