Can the Recessed Trailer D-Ring Tie Down with Backing Plate be Used on an Aluminum Trailer Floor

Hello: I have a new all aluminum trailer, including the floor, which is 1/8inch aluminum tread plate. I need to install additional D Rings in order to use wheel tie downs for a car. Will a standard backing plate provide enough strength or is additional backing required for this application?

The backing plate that comes with the tie down, # RR5K, is strong enough for its 5,000 pound capacity so no additional support is needed for it. I recommend placing the tie downs so that the are over the frame of the trailer where the most support is. If they are bolted to the frame, that would be the strongest point.

Since you have an aluminum trailer I suggest using a tie-down that has a backing plate like #RR5K. This will help reinforce the tie-down since aluminum may not hold up. It would be even better if you can install the tie-downs to the frame of the…

In order to determine the torque rating for the lug nuts on your trailer you will need to know check out the chart I attached that shows all of the torque specs for all the trailer lugs available based on stud size, wheel material and wheel size.
