i have no power to my trailer lights after hooking up the factory pre wired recdeptacle to the vw factory connector into a 7 pin to 4 pin connecter. does the vecdhicle have to be programmed or is there a step i may be missing?

It sounds like you are using a 7 to 4-Way adapter in the factory trailer connector on your 2012 VW Tiguan. If the trailer has LED tail lights, you will need a special adapter, # C35FR. This adapter should allow the trailer lights to function properly.
