Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2020 Toyota RAV4
Question:
I just bought a 2020 Toyota RAV4 and I need to install a hitch to tow a small utility trailer. Can you tell me which parts I need?

In addition to the hitch you'll also need a wiring harness for trailer lights, a ball mount and hitch ball. For the hitch, I recommend using the Curt # C13416 since the straight cross-tube on the hitch will keep it a little further under the vehicle, so you won't have to worry about banging your knees on it when unloading cargo from the rear of the vehicle. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver that will work well for towing applications as well as carrying a variety of hitch mounted accessories.
You will also need a wiring harness to power the lights on your trailer; you'll want to use the Curt T Connector # C56434 which will plug in behind the trim panels in the cargo area on the driver and passenger side and provide you with a 4 way connector at the rear of your RAV4.
To complete your towing setup, you'll need a ball mount and hitch ball. I recommend using the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 hitch balls, a hitch pin and clip. This kit will allow you to cover a variety of different rise/drop setups as needed, as well as tow trailers with different coupler sizes. I've provided a list of the included components below.
Kit includes:
- Ball mount with 3/4" rise or 2" drop (# D-4)
- Ball mount with 2-3/4" rise or 4" drop (# 2753)
- 1-7/8" x 1" x 2-1/8" trailer hitch ball (# 19260)
- 2" x 1" x 2-1/8" trailer hitch ball (# 63845)
- 2 Pins and clips (# PC3)
- etrailer.com ball mount bag (# ETBMB)
I've also linked some installation and review videos of these products that you might find helpful if you're wanting to install them yourself.
