Recommended Roof Rack for a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe To Secure Kayak
Question:
Hi guys, I recently picked up a new Santa Fe from our local dealer and got the Hyundai roof racks added in. Used it for the first time this weekend and ended up with damage to the bonnet, as a kayak slipped right off the front of the car parked on a small hill and I hadn’t tied it down yet. When I looked closer I realised the racks have a tiny rubber strip in the centre which is soft and recedes with any weight in it. The bars are hard plastic, which means anything not rubberised like, unfortunately, my kayak just slips right off of on even a tiny angle. Just as problematic, the rack mounts are angled and smooth, which means there is nothing to either side to anchor a load and stop it slipping left and right. I’m considering replacing the Hyundai rack with something else, loved the rhino rack I had on my IX35. Just seems like a crazy design, but really would love your thoughts.

The roof rack that I recommend for a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe is the Thule WingBar Evo Crossbar System which is composed of part # TH711220, part # TH460R, and part # THKIT4093. The Thule WingBar Evo Crossbar System will mount to the side rails which makes for the best look and it has one of the quietest crossbar designs on the market so there will be very little wind noise and drag. Furthermore, you will be able to carry multiple kayaks with this roof rack as you have extra space beyond the mounting feet on the crossbar.
Please note, it is not a good idea to just place the kayak directly on top of the crossbars as there would be little security with this method. In order to secure a kayak you will need an actual kayak carrier. The Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier part # TH898 is what I recommend since it has a load assist feature but you could also go with Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier part # Y04073 which does not have load assist.
I have attached an install video of the Thule WingBar Evo Crossbar System on a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe as well.
