In your owner's manual, for the 265/50-20 tire size Jeep (FCA) specifies the Thule (now owned by Konig) XG 12 Pro chains in size 267 which is part # TH01594267. These chains are considered Class S, which allow the proper clearance so that the wheel wells and suspension and braking components to the inside of the wheels isn't damaged by the chains.
Although the Konig standard chains you'd looked at, part # TH01571265 are the proper size for your tires, they would extend past the inside surface of the tire by 16mm, which could likely cause damage as you noted. The XG 12 Chanis Jeep recommends only extend in as far as 12mm, and would provide proper clearance.
It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the installation/removal process in a safe location like your driveway or garage. I've linked you to demonstration video showing the chains being installed on a 2017 Grand Cherokee.
