Transmission Cooler for 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Limited with Class IV Tow Package

Question:

Which transmission cooler would you recommend and can it be mounted horizontally, under the vehicle? The vehicle is rated at 7,200 lb. towing and I plan to tow an approximately 26 ~ 30 ft. travel trailer weighing approx. 5,500 lbs. According to the build sheet the vehicle has a heavy duty engine cooling I assume Engine Oil cooling system so not planning to add another unless you advise to do so.

If you were to add an aftermarket transmission cooler to your 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee then I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D13504 because it is the most efficient option. However, since you have the Class IV Tow Package that includes enhanced engine cooling and you won't be pushing the towing weight capacity of your vehicle I don't think you need another cooler. (please note that if you were to mount this under the vehicle it would be subject to any road debris that is kicked up so you would mount it in your engine compartment).

With that being said, I do recommend using a weight distribution system because a longer trailer like that will be much more susceptible to sway since your Grand Cherokee isn't a very long vehicle (like a pickup).

For a 5,500 lb trailer (fully loaded) I recommend using the Reese Strait-Line # RP66083 because it features a premium sway system that works to stop sway before it starts. To complete the towing setup you need either a 2" # A-90 or 2-5/16" # 19286 hitch ball and then I also recommend using the tongue weight scale # e99044 to help make sure your trailer has a tongue weight that is 10-15% of the total weight of the trailer. This ratio promotes safe towing and the least amount of trailer sway with your setup.

I have attached some helpful articles on weight distribution and transmission coolers that you can check out.
