Transmission Cooler for a 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500 with 6.0 Liter Motor

Question:

2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 6.0 V-8. Its lifted and I tow a bumper pull trailer @ 11,000lbs. The Trans temp will run about 10-20 degrees too hot 220 when hitting the hills if the outside temp is over 100. Normal temp is around 200-205. What is the best Trans cooler option for this truck? I plan on getting a 5th wheel that is 3000lbs heavier, but I will change my gearing to 488s. I have 456s right now. I have also heard that a 5th wheel tows better than a bumper pull. Is that true? Thank you in advance for the help

For a transmission cooler for your 2012 Chevy Silverado 2500 with 364 motor I recommend going with an efficient cooler (higher class rating) for optimum cooling. Derale Transmission Cooler # D13504 is a great option since it has a class IV rating meaning it is very efficient. I have linked a video review of this cooler and a link to our informational article on transmission coolers for you.

A 5th wheel trailer would tow "better" (it is subjective though) than a bumper pull for a couple of reasons. First, they are generally heavier which means they are less susceptible to sway caused by crosswinds or passing vehicles. Second they are connected closer to the center of the truck which is more stable than a trailer connected at a rear-mounted trailer hitch.
