Can Demco Recon 5th Wheel Hitch Safely Tow 20K GVWR Toy Hauler

Question:

I have a 03 GMC Sierra 3500 dually and am upgrading fifthwheels. I have a 06 crossroads Paradise Pointe 32bh now and I have the ranch hitch straight gooseneck adapter and it has worked flawless with the Reese elite removable gooseneck ball. I’m upgrading to a 14 Dutchman voltage 3990 toy hauler. My cross roads fully loaded weighs about 16k the new one fully loaded they say is 20k, empty it’s 16k. The two questions I have is will the ranch hitch work with the tri glide trail air on the new fifth wheel I know the ranch hitch is rated at 30k and 6k tongue weight. I thought I read somewhere it’s not recommended for cushioned kingpins. This leads me to my second question assuming I’m right will the Demco recon work good for my setup even if it’s close to the max rating. I don’t really wanna install a fifth wheel hitch with rails in my bed. Thanks

You are correct that the Ranch Hitch # AM3100 adapter is not compatible with the Tri-Glide pin box as it was designed to be used with standard pin boxes only (nothing cushioned or with an air bag).

It is important to have some cushion in weight capacities when it comes to any kind of towing and the 21K Demco Recon # DM8550045 will have 1,000 lbs of extra capacity if you were to load your 2014 Dutchman Voltage V3990 all the way to the 20K capacity.

With all of that being said, it would be good to double check the max towing weight capacity of your 2003 GMC Sierra 3500 as well. From what I could find online it looks like the max capacity is somewhere around the 15K - 16K mark but I wasn't quite able to find an exact number. You should be able to determine your max capacity by looking in your copy of the owner's manual, giving your VIN to your local GM dealer, or subtracting your Sierra GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) from your GCWR (gross combined weight rating) which should both be located on the sticker in your driver's side door jamb.
