How To Separate Turn and Brake Signal On Trailer
Question:
Can I use this backwards to split out the signal indicator and brake light circuits so that I can have side signal lights and separate signal and brake lights on the back of my trailer?

I do have an option for you to keep the brake lights and turn signals on the trailer separate however the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # C56190 is not going to work that way.
I recommend Curt 2-To-3-Wire Tail Light Converter part # C56196 to separate the functions. The input side, white wire is ground, green is the combined right turn signal/brake light and yellow is the left turn signal/brake light. On the output side you have the green for right turn signal only, red for brake and yellow for left turn signal only. The running light circuit bypasses the converter. You want to install the converter on the trailer side.
