Should I Use Eco-Hitch To Tow 3,000 Lb Trailer With 2015 BMW X5
Question:
I am interested in the eco hitch for use with my bmw x5 f15, sdrive 35i. I am wanting to tow an 17-20foot RV trailer with a dry weight of about 3,000-4,000 lbs. I also have a 20foot boat that weighs about 3,000 lbs. I see that the capacity of the hitch is about 1,000lbs less and 100lb less than the standard Class III. I figure this is okay since my cars capacity is about 6000 lbs and I really dont want to try to push that close to the limit. Do you have any feedback on this hitch? I like the hidden look of the hitch and would prefer it to the curt or draw-tite models if you think it is sufficient for what I am trying to tow. Thanks!

Since your trailer's dry weight is 4,000 lbs I do not recommend to use a the EcoHitch - 2015 BMW X5 part # 306-X7265 because your tongue weight before the trailer is even loaded could be between 400-600 lbs. I recommend to use the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit part # 75600 which will allow you a 600 lb tongue weight but that is still probably not going to be enough for the 17-20 RV trailer considering once you have it loaded the tongue weight will be more. If it's closer to the 3,000 lb dry weight like you mentioned then you should be okay though as long as you do not exceed 600 lbs. If you plan on towing that much weight I definitely do not recommend going with the Eco-Hitch because you may need a weight distribution system which the Eco-hitch is not compatible with.
