Reducing Sway with Existing Weight Distribution System When Large Vehicles Pass On Highway

Question:

I currently have a weight distributing hitch that works well for pulling my 1986 Airstream travel trailer max trailer weight 6500lbs. My biggest concern is the amount of pull or push or both when large vehicles pass me. Suggestions??

The type of sway you're describing is certainly something that a weight distribution system (with integrated sway control) can help reduce or quickly resolve but it's also something that's hard to avoid when towing. Any time you get passed by a big semi-truck on the highway or you experience high crosswinds, trailer sway/movement is an unfortunate inevitability that components like your WD system can work to limit but not ultimately prevent altogether.

With that being said depending on the type of system you have installed you can always add an additional friction sway bar like the excellent Curt # 17200 to further stiffen up your setup. This simply attaches to the trailer frame and adjustable shank/ball mount and uses friction to help keep the trailer in line.

We also have the Curt # C94VV that would do a really nice job of adding to and supplementing an existing sway control system. This plugs in-line with the 7-Way connector on the trailer and it will automatically send pulses of power back to the electric brake assemblies when it detects side-to-side movement on the trailer in an effort to quickly get it back under control.

If you can tell me what brand weight distribution system you have I will also be happy to recommend anything else you can try such as a specific adjustment on your existing setup.
