Over the course of a few hours this should not be a concern but beyond that definitely. One option is just unplugging the trailer from your tow vehicle.

You can also install a battery isolation solenoid onto your tow vehicle like the Battery Isolation Solenoid Item # PK5231201. This switch installs inline with the 12 volt auxiliary circuit so it turns off when your truck is turned off. The 12V feed remains active when your vehicle is running only. This helps prevent your tow vehicle batteries from getting drained but you can still be charging your trailer battery while the tow vehicle is running.

For charging a trailer battery you want to go with as thick of wire as you can. 10 gauge would be ideal. We sell 10 gauge wire by the foot with part # 10-1-1.

You will need ring terminals to connect, like # DW05705-1.
