How to Determine Replacement Axle for Trailer Tires Wearing on Inside
Question:
Hi I purchased a used boat a few years ago. I noticed that Im running through tires like crazy and they are wearing almost soley on the inside of the tire. The boat is 2140lb dry, so with the toe rack and loaded with gear it would be approx 2500lb. The axle is square 2x2x1/4 galvanized steel and has a slight . It is 88 hub face to hub face. When not under load it sits exactly level using a straight edged. When under load it sags approx 1/2. Unfortunately the trailer doesnt have any specifications on it. This leads me to believe the axle is undersized for the boat though. That being said all of the axles I can find that are 2x2x1/4 seam to be rated for 3500lb. Is there anything else that would cause the axle to sag like this under load other than it being under sized? Also the tires are St175/80R13 max load is 1360lbs which leads me to believe that the axle is not likely rated for 3500lb. Just wondering if its possible Im missing something, or if replacing the axle is the best course of action, and if so increasing the tire size as well? I took some photos, one under load and one not under load, also the hub assembly. Let me know your thoughts please. Thank you

Trailer tires that are constantly wearing on the inside does point to an overloaded axle so replacing your axle is likely the best bet. A trailer axle actually bends upward a bit (in order to even out when under a load) so there is really nothing else that would cause the issue you are having.
While we don't carry any 88 inch hub face to hub face axles, you do have another option, the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System, which are simply bolted or welded so you do not have to worry about finding an axle that meets any specific measurements such as the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # A35RS545 which have a 3,500 lb capacity.
I have added a link to a video review of the Timbrens as well as a link to our selection of them for you to take a look at.
