Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch and Installation Kit for a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500

Question:

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 short bed, I was wondering if this set-up will work the best considering I have a short bed. Im not sure if I should go with a 10inch slide or the 12inch slide. Does the extra 2 inches make that big of a difference?

The installation kit I would recommend for your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 would be the Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit, # RP50140-58. This kit will require less drilling and make the installation go much easier. Of course the install kit you mentioned, # RP30035-186, is a semi-custom kit and will work also, just a bit more drilling and measuring.

The slider hitch you purchase would be determined by the installation kit you select and the width of your 5th wheel trailer, along with the addition of any extension of the trailer king pin. I posted a photo showing how to measure. You will also need to take into account the distance back to the tailgate to make sure the slider will not cause the pin box to hit the tailgate. Normally these issues are not encountered with either the 10 inch or 12 inch slider on a truck bed 6 feet or longer, but checking beforehand is a good idea.

Page 4 and 5 of the installation instructions show the approximate cab to king pin distance for the RP50140-58 install kit I mentioned, see link.

If you can use the 12 inch slider hitch, like part # C16541, the hitch will slide easier, and will provide 2 additional inches of clearance than the 10 inch slider.
