Can Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller be Installed Sideways on Passenger Side of Vehicle
Question:
I bought a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee a couple weeks ago, as part of the deal was a full towing package including the electronic break controller, as I have a small dual axle toy hauler for my motorcycle. The unit they put in was not a mopar part which I fully assumed it would come with as it was a new vehicle. It is a Voyager, 9030, by tekonsha. I noticed it is mounted sideways in the passenger side of the vehicle due to drivers side is full of airbags where it would normally be installed. After reading the directions it says it has to be parallel to the direction of traffic. Do you know if it matters too much how it is mounted? Thanks,

It does matter quite a bit that Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 brake controller is mounted correctly because it has an internal sensor to help with the proportional braking. Is they mounted it sideways and in the passenger side of your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee then they really messed it up. This brake controller does need to be mounted in the direction of travel and with a vertical angle between -20 degrees and 70 degrees. Brake controllers also have a manual override that you would use in the event of an emergency. This override applies full power to the trailer brakes. With the controller mounted in the passenger seat it would mean you have to lean over to activate the manual override...something you should definitely not be doing, especially in an emergency situation.
You definitely need to speak to them about the terrible choice in mounting location and about how it was installed incorrectly. If they drilled into your dash I would bring that up as being an issue as well. You might be able to request a controller upgrade for your trouble (the Voyager is a reliable controller but a little outdated). A great option is the Curt Echo # C51180 because it plugs into the 7-Way at the rear of your vehicle for the installation and you adjust the setting via your Apple or Android smart device. If you want more of a traditional controller I recommend shooting for the Prodigy P3 # 90195 as it is the newest addition to the Tekonsha controllers and comes with an easy-to-read LCD screen.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I am glad that you noticed the incorrect installation and reached out!
