How to Select Replacement Double-Eye Leaf Springs for Trailer
Question:
The lenght from the bolt to bolt is aprox.26in on my trailer and the leaf spring that I took off is approx. 26.5in when I looked in Amazon and local stores, I can only find a 25in plus and a 27in plus. is there a 26in leaf spring or can i use a 25 in or a 27in? looking at the current springfree and no load I do not think that it is a 27in since the lenght to eye center to eye center is 26.5 in and i am pretty sure that it should not get short as it wears. but I also do not fill comfortable using 25 since the shackle will should slightly fold towards the front shackle.

When selecting a pair of new double-eye leaf springs for your trailer axle you want to match up both the axle weight rating and the springs' eye-to-eye dimension. Please note that you should ALWAYS always replace both springs on the axle at the same time to avoid alignment/tracking problems. Leaf springs DO get longer as they flatten out from wear, but they never get shorter.
First, determine the axle weight rating. This can be done by checking the sticker on the axle beam itself, by finding the axle weight rating on the trailer's main identification plate or within the specs section of the owner documentation. You can also contact the trailer manufacturer with the trailer's VIN.
Once you know the weight rating you then want to choose a set of springs with that capacity that are just shy of your eye-to-eye measurement of the old spring. Since leaf springs do stretch over time if you measure 26-1/2 inches you'll want a 26-inch spring like # e77SR for 2000-lb axles, # e27SR for 4,500-lb axles or # e94SR for 6000-lb axles.
All double-eye springs appear on the linked page. Just click your axle rating, then the appropriate spring length, and choose two springs whose combined capacity equals the weight rating of the axle.
You can also refer to the linked article concerning double eye suspensions which has a lot of helpful information.
