We actually have a great article on exactly this subject, which I have linked below.
To test the individual brake magnets on the trailer you will need to use a multimeter like # PT89ZR that reads amps and ohms. You will sever the magnet wires and connect the multimeter between the positive post of a 12V battery and one of the wires (it doesn't matter which one). Then connect the other magnet wire to the negative battery terminal. If the amperage is more or less than it should be (see attached chart) then the magnet needs to be replaced.
