Troubleshooting HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes

Question:

Hello, I recently installed the p2 controller. I am using a hydra star Hba- 10 electric over hydraulic system. The tekonsha prodigy p2 controller is set to electric over hydraulic and shows a capital C when connected. When the brake pedal is depressed I can hear the pump actuate however braking feels non existent and with the trailer wheels suspended using a jack the truck braking will not stop the wheel, even when set to b3 even with braking set to max 13. Same situation with trailer wheels in air, manual switch is activated, power setting shows 13, pump loads up, free spinning wheel eventually stops. The brakes are all adjusted properly, brake lines are bled w/ no air showing. I cannot figure out how to troubleshoot this so that braking is sufficient using the vehicle brake pedal. Also I should note w/ trailer suspended, wheel spinning, brake away switch pulled, pump loads up and locks up wheel. Also I should note, both instances using manual switch on controller and breakaway switch at trailer, pump loads up but the wheel rotation does not stop immediately until pump loads up and pump pitch changes. Thanks so much for your help.

I was unable to find an order number for you so I don't know the exact set up you used to install the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes - 1,000 psi # HBA-10, but the issue doesn't seem to be the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885.

The issue is almost certainly the wiring or brake lines you are using, and it is strongly recommend you use 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 for the power lead of the actuator. Additionally, your brake links may be too small in diameter or too long. You will need at least 3/16" lines, and if you can use a 15' line kit such as the HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Tandem Axle - 15' Long, 3/16" Main Line # HS496-152 that would be a better option than the 25' HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # HS496-252.

You will also want to be very certain you check the ground connections as this can be the cause of the proper voltage, as well as a connector that may be corroded.
