Trailer Wiring Plug Location on a 1997 Subaru Legacy Wagon GT

Question:

I have looked everywhere at the rear wiring harness on my 97 Legacy Wagon GT and there is no T for a wiring harness connection. If anyone has a definite picture of such a beast, Id love to see the proof.

If your 1997 Subaru Legacy Wagon GT is not the Outback version, then you will not actually have a plug-in point for a trailer wiring harness. Non-Outback versions of the wagon must hard wire to install a 4-Way trailer connector, using a kit like part # C55370.

To hard wire the kit, you would use the included circuit tester to determine which wire carries each function behind your vehicle tail lights. You will also need to run a power wire to the positive terminal on the vehicle battery. I am including links to the installation instructions as well as a typical installation video for you to reference.

If your vehicle is a Legacy Outback Wagon GT, then the plug-in point for the # 118461 wiring harness should be located near the bottom, passenger side edge of the wall trim in your cargo area. You would need to remove the floor panel and foam pieces from around the spare tire area. Usually, the plug is tucked up behind the bottom edge of the wall panel. Refer to the :25 second mark in the video I have linked, which shows the harness being installed on a 2001 Outback Wagon model.

I am including a link to the installation instructions for the # 118461 for you to review. The instructions also show another common location for the plug on the Outback Wagon, right behind the small trim panel on the driver side of your cargo area that gives you access to the back of the tail light. You can check in this area if you are not finding the plug at the bottom of the wall panel.
